SERVICE
expand our service to patients beyond providing surgical care and create a positive change within their sociocultural context and within their communities beyond hospital walls.
FACULTY Chair: Service
Tricia Charise, MS, ACNP-BC
As an NP in the SICU, I feel incredibly fortunate to care for so many of the underserved in our community. But, I also see firsthand how social determinants of health significantly impact our patients wellness. As a strong proponent of health equity, I appreciate that SRS offers the opportunity to work with a group of providers, residents, and students with a shared passion for service and advocacy. I believe that together we can work towards helping to identify and overcome disparities to provide better care for our patients and their families, while also educating and supporting future leaders.
Resident Chair: Service
Rachel Rivero, MD

SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
On acute surgery services, providers often lack time for patient education. The Service Learning Project aims to merge the unmet needs of patients with desires of medical students for early clinical experience. In this mutually beneficial model, students interact with patients, helping them understand their procedures and screening them for social determinants of health (SDH). The goal is increased patient health literacy, improved inpatient experience, and clinical exposure for students at earlier training levels. A recent study published in the American Journal of Surgery demonstrates the positive impact this program has on medical student education (click here to see the study).
